BACKGROUND: Jacob treated his 11th son with a loving preference over and above his other sons. He gave 17-year-old Joseph a coat of many colors. Joseph arrogantly told his brothers of a dream that they would one day bow down to him. Consequently, his brothers hated him and agreed to a plot to kill him. Instead, his brother Judah suggested that they sell Joseph as a slave to a passing caravan of Ishmaelites heading to Egypt. Years later, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt attempting to buy corn. They brought with them their youngest brother Benjamin whom Joseph had never met.
Genesis 45:1-15 When Joseph saw his brothers he was overwhelmed. He wept loudly and said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” His brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. Joseph said, “Come close to me. I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. We are in the second year of what will be a seven-year famine. God sent me to preserve for you as a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. Hurry back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me Lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay. You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me; you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. I will provide for you there. He threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping; and he kissed all his brothers and wept over them.”
